Rolling Mill Hill

Walking Tour of the Neighborhood

Rolling Mill Hill is a city-driven urban development offering residential and commercial space. The Metropolitan Development and Housing Agency serves as the master planner of this 34-acre, city-owned property.

In 2003, MDHA hired a consultant to create a 15-year redevelopment plan. After an impass during the recession where an out-of-town developer fell into bankruptcy and sent the development into receivership, the old General Hospital site, overlooking Downtown Nashville and across the Cumberland River over East Nashville, offers several apartment buildings, which are fully occupied.

The six Public Work garages, also known as the Trolley Barns, on the bottom of the hill now house a diverse group of businesses, including Pinewood Social, a local restaurant that makes Rolling Mill Hill a destination even after hours. The Mathews Company developed the six trolley barns, but the land beneath the structures is still owned by MDHA. A lease agreement will ensure the use of the land reverts back to the city after 85 years.

Development Master Plan

Rolling Mill Hill offers Downtown living opportunities with its residential development projects on top of the hill at the old hospital site.

In addition, the historic Trolley Barns (which never really were trolley barns, but rather served as Public Works garages) provide a destination with for commerical and office use. In addition, Pinewood Social makes Rolling Mill Hill attractive to visitors even after hours.
